Good morning, oppo. I'm prepping my sister's 2002 Jetta for sale and need recommendations on what to use inside. The cloth seats and carpet were rarely vacuumed and likely never properly cleaned in the time she's owned it, and there are odors present, so I've got my work cut out for me. Preferably something easy to use and available at the local PepBoys/Walmart/Home Depot/etc. What do you use?

Can we see what the seats/carpet look like at some point?
It really depends on the level of cleaning that needs to be done...

I swear by this "stuff"

Done. Certainly not the worst I've seen, but there are brown stains, black stains, general dirtiness, this weird orange stain in the folds of the driver's seat (not sure what it is or if it will come off). parts of the cloth are beginning to blacken from dirt accumulation, carpet stained in places. I'll do the best I can with it.

Ok, after seeing what it looks like I'd steam clean the entire thing and if the seats aren't power I'd take those out an do a deep clean on the carpet.
Odors are never a good thing while selling a car, and stuff like that gives people good reasons to try and haggle at the price.

I did a second reply with what I thought you should do.
Smudgey suggested some good stuff for spot cleaning, but the entire interior looks like it could use a little help.
So all of the stains are pretty much mystery stains from what I can see?

I think Tavarish had some basic guides/suggestions. On his website too. http://www.apidaonline.com/

x2
Only stuff I use on my Recaros, which are such delicate flowers that water stains the mesh.

All mystery stains, I haven't tried cleaning anything up yet. I agree steam cleaning is necessary, but the question is where do I obtain (preferably rent) a steam cleaner and how much would that cost? The exterior is in rather poor shape as well and there are a couple lights on the mechanic couldn't diagnose. The most prominent odor is the well documented "crayon smell" due to whatever VW used under the carpet, so that's not going away, I'd just like to freshen it up a bit. I'd be happy to get like $1800 for it, so no sense paying hundreds of dollars to rent equipment or pay a professional.

You can get them for like $120 or something like that at Walmart, but if you don't want to get them there look into rental places in your area. I think that Safeway used to rent them out to people. But since it seems that the car isn't in that good of condition and wouldn't be worth that much anyways I'd just go with the cheap stuff and not even both wasting money on that much equipment or a professional.
What are the lights on the dash?

MIL & EPC. It's an auto 2.slow with 78K miles, has been in an accident & has various broken/missing parts. Still runs & drives fine (for now), kinda fun to drive (slow car fast, etc.) Just want to clean it up as best I can to maximize price, since I loaned her the $ for the new car, it'll be more $ back in my pocket / less she owes.

If you get a VAG-COM you'll be able to diagnose the MIL light at least, but with that one there could be 100's of things that could be triggering it.
The EPC light is a more worrying one, it stands for the Electronic Power Control if something gets even worse the car can end up in limp mode and that's never good. I'd have that one looked at for sure. If the power delivery or something like that does not seem normal then whoever is going to be buying the car will notice that.
It does have low miles which can be a selling point, but the general mechanical/physical condition of the car seems to be a bit worrying from the description that you gave.
I'd personally buy this bluetooth Vag-Com cable which is only slightly above $20 and just include it with the sale of the car unless you have other VAG products. It's great for pinpointing what's up with those lights and I'm not sure what kind of mechanic can't diagnose simple warning light :S

You guys have fabric in your cars? Even my 1985 Volvo has heated LEATHER seats.... peasants!

Thanks for the tips. Power delivery is fine, it's never gone into limp mode. I'll check out that bluetooth cable. We don't use that mechanic anymore, but also don't want to put any more money into the car beyond a thorough cleaning that I feel is just a prerequisite to selling a car.

Si, always happy to help. I totally understand where you are coming from.
The good thing about the VAG-Com cable is that if the problems aren't major you can just include what they are and how much the problems would cost to repair in the description.
